We are talking about your wedding dress. It’s a pretty important thing. In fact, it’s probably the most significant garment you will ever wear. Therefore, you want it to reflect your personality and personal style. However, finding a bridal style that appears distinctive from all the rest is no easy feat – unless you have a gown custom designed for you (which most of us cannot afford) or choose one of these “wow” add-ons (which everyone can afford –and we can do for you):
Something Old
How about incorporating a piece of fabric from your sister, mother or grandmother’s wedding dress to your own? It’s a wonderful way to honor the women in your family while adding a one-of-a-kind accent to your dress.
Something New
“Adding crystals, pearls and other elegant embellishments to the bodice of your gown can really up the wow factor,” says stylist Sam Saboura of TLC’s Something Borrowed, Something New. Some of the most exclusive designers in the world opt for glued-on appliqués and embellishments — even on gowns that cost upwards of $10,000.
Something Borrowed
As in, borrowing inspiration and ideas from the famous wedding dresses of celebrities. Soften your dress with the addition of delicate lace sleeves (actress Christina Ricci). Draw attention to your waist and add some sparkle with a cloth band adorned with glittering gems (Khloe Kardashian). Add an eye-catching statement piece to your veil, such as a flower-adorned headband (actress Anne Hathaway) or beaded headpiece (singer Alicia Keys). Or, since your wedding day is your day to be a princess, follow the famous footsteps of Princess Kate and Princess Diana by adding elegantly formed trimmings to the hem of your skirt and train.
Something Blue
Want to add a shot of color to your white or ivory ensemble? You can add a godet (a triangle insert of fabric) in a soft blue (or any color you prefer) hue to the back of your skirt or inset into your train to create some drama and personalize your look. The underskirt of your dress is also a subtle and creative place to add fabric in your favorite color or pattern.
By combining the wedding dress you love with our tips above, you’ll be able to add some wows as you say your vows.
